Connect your domain
Every new site starts on a temporary address. When you’re ready to use your own domain:
- Open the site and go to its Domains tab.
- Under Connect your domain, type your domain, like
example.com. - Leave Also redirect www.example.com on unless you don’t want
www.to work. - The dashboard shows the DNS records to add: an A record for each name, pointing at your server’s address.
Add the records at your DNS provider
Section titled “Add the records at your DNS provider”Sign in where your domain’s DNS is managed (often where you bought the domain, or Cloudflare) and add the records exactly as shown:
| Type | Name | Value |
|---|---|---|
| A | @ (or example.com) |
your server’s address |
| A | www |
your server’s address |
Remove any AAAA records for these names for now.
Back on the Domains tab, the status beside each record turns to Ready once it’s live. DNS changes usually appear within minutes, but can take a few hours.
Then click Connect domain & enable HTTPS. We issue a free HTTPS certificate and switch the site over. The site keeps working on its temporary address until that’s done, and the certificate renews by itself.
Using Cloudflare
Section titled “Using Cloudflare”Sites work behind Cloudflare’s proxy (the orange cloud), and see their visitors’ real addresses. While you connect the domain, set its records to DNS only (the grey cloud): through the proxy we can’t see where they point. Once HTTPS is set up here, turn the proxy back on, and set Cloudflare’s SSL mode to Full (strict).
